Dr. Rosemary Coogan (b. 1991, Belfast, Northern Ireland) is an astrophysicist and one of the five “career” astronaut candidates selected by the ESA in November 2022, from over 22,500 applicants. She earned an MPhys in Physics (2013) and an MSc in Astronomy (2015) from Durham University, where her research focused on gamma‑ray emissions from black holes. In 2019 she completed her PhD in Astronomy at the University of Sussex, studying galaxy evolution, including active galactic nuclei, and simulated future observational surveys.
Selected in November 2022, Rosemary began ESA’s one‑year basic astronaut training in April 2023 and was officially certified at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne on 22 April 2024. Her training included spacecraft systems, spacewalk (EVA) drills, flight engineering, robotics, life‑support systems, winter survival in the Pyrenees, centrifuge and hypoxia sessions, plus zero‑gravity flights. She speaks English, French, and basic German. She attained astronaut certification at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre on 22 April 2024, rendering her eligible for spaceflight assignments.
