The deployment of large constellations of satellites in LEO is producing negative impacts on astronomical observations across the electromagnetic spectrum. Studies, observations and modelling have advanced our understanding of the potential impact on different types of astronomical observations and on the night sky. Awareness is high in the astronomy community, and largely in the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) thanks to the recently established Agenda Item on Dark and Quiet Skies at its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee. Nevertheless, there is still work to do on awareness of the space industry, communicating challenges and possible mitigation measures being tested. This work will present the challenges astronomy is facing, introduce some mitigations that are being developed and tested and will discuss some of the work ongoing in international forums such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UN COPUOS. We will discuss concrete actions where the UK ecosystem can collaborate to advance mitigations to protect D&QS.
